Unfortunately things dont happen just because theyre economically viable. Corporate power and political power have a lot to do with how we live our lives. Examples are the original Tesla electric car, the outlawing of hemp to protect the paper and wood industry, and the very expensive healthcare system we have now instead of a single payer system the rest of the developed (and some of the developing) world enjoys. This is an example of that. The past three years in America wind was the cheapest energy. Out west there is a wind corridor project that was built through several states and they are now benefiting from that investment. In Ohio, our politicians passed a law giving us the largest wind turbine setback distance. So new onshore wind projects have halted since that law was passed in 2014. About the birds, oil and gas infrastructure and climate change kill more birds than wind turbines. The birds were an early consideration in this wind turbine project and the turbines were placed outside the migration path which is to the west of the project.
Skeptic, we are not dependent at all on Middle Eastern oil. Our oil comes from Canada and South Anerica. The jobs from fracking are out of staters who put in the wells, locals who drive trucks, and a couple of workers on the pads. The idea that this is a great job creator has been debunked at least by one study out of Ohio State.
Skeptic, you are either a paid troll to spread misinformation about renewable energy or you are extremely uninformed about the tremendous strides in the affordability and reliability of renewable energy. If you are the former you are part of the attacks by the fossil fuel industry on a formidable alternate to their dirty products. If you are the latter there is a lot of information online on renewable energy like at the Post Carbon Institute and at Stanford University's Solutions Project.
Erin, looks to me like this is a great article that spells out what the Ohio leaders' choice of fracking is bringing us. We could have rolled out the red carpet for the renewable energy industry. It was a good fit with our history of ceramic and glass production. We already were the 2nd biggest producer of wind energy components in America-not the blades but the other components. All the polls showed the public favored renewable energy. But we are squashing that industry in Ohio -can you say SB310- and tripping over ourselves doing everything the frackers want. We need to know this stuff because no one is looking out for Ohio's health and economy. The citizens have to know this stuff. Thanks, Scene, for the effort of looking at all the factors involved in the fracking industry.
I listened to the SOI program Monday morning and all the call in questions were from people who were facing health or other probems from fracking in their neighborhoods. No one on the panel was an expert in any of the health or environmental problems that come with fracking so the questions went unanswered. This in itself shows that the program was biased. This is not what we expect from 90.3 and Mike Macintyre. Thank you, Scene, for this coverage of an urgent matter to Ohioans.
