Best Place to Take Out-of-Towners

West Side Market

History, art, architecture, sociology, economics, urban development, foreign languages -- and multicultural cuisine: The 91-year-old West Side Market is a syllabus for the study of Cleveland 101. The striking neoclassical/Byzantine-style building, home to more than 100 vendors selling everything from carnations to cactus salad and pierogi to prime beef, has been called one of the nation's "great public spaces," "a little piece of Europe," and "an urban treasure." But an out-of-town friend said it best, while gazing up at the magnificent herringbone ceiling: "Man, this place is awesome!" And so it is.
