Best Store for Girl Power

The Green Tomato

We're not talking Precious Moments figurines here. Located in Cleveland's Little Bohemia, the Green Tomato has chick-oriented pop-culture bonbons you won't find anywhere else. Owner Gayle Lewis makes sure of it: She had Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Pony pajamas years ago, before the big-box retailers plundered the product line. Anything too mainstream gets tossed in favor of new cutting-edge merch. Emily the Strange, that raven-haired goth-chick cartoon character, and her redhead cousin Ruby Gloom are available on everything from undies and socks to barrettes and light-switch plates. Dishtowels for the mature woman pair '50s-era images of too-happy domestic goddesses with liberated quips like "Domestically Disabled" and "I dreamed my whole house was cleaned." Also visit the mother lode of anime in the back. You won't be able to read the lettering (it's in Japanese) on the charms, notebooks, and stickers, but the little characters and bright colors are irresistible.
