This Karamu House adaptation of James Weldon Johnson's work blossomed into a powerful tribute to the old-time black preachers who thundered from the pulpits. Mixing free verse with gospel music and modern and African dance, God's Trombones offered a multitude of sterling stage experiences. Among them, Karen Gorman-Jones was animated as both a choir conductor and soloist, Durand Ferebee sang "I'm Coming Home" with sweet earnestness, and De'Ja Connor dazzled in the final "Hallelujah" anthem.
