If you’re a fan of animal-abuse porn — and who isn't, really — you may remember the video of the employee of Conklin Dairy Farms in Marysville who was caught on an undercover video in May, violently assaulting cows and calves.

That employee, Billy Joe Gregg, Jr., pleaded guilty today in Marysville Municipal Court to six counts of cruelty to animals. Six other charges were dropped in a plea agreement. Gregg got eight months’ jail time and a $1,000 fine. He also got three years’ probation during which he’s require to get counseling and can’t be around animals for three years. Animals in the Marysville area are breathing a little easier.

Needless to say, Mercy for Animals, one of the more militant animal rights groups, isn’t entirely happy with the outcome of Gregg’s case. The group’s director of investigations Daniel Hauff calls it “a slap on the wrist.”

“We are asking the public to reach out to Ohio legislators and urge them to put forth bill that would increase the penalties for cruelty to animals,” says Hauff. “We need to have laws that give judges the tools they need to make the sentence fit the crime. There’s only one level of charges to bring up for farm animals, and there are different levels of abuse. This man was sadistically abusing cows and calves long before we got there. People who abuse animals often move on to abusing humans. It’s important that people take abuse to animals seriously.”

Hauff says a group of about eight independent protestors not affiliated with Mercy for Animals (“I think they got together on Facebook,” he says) were outside the courthouse with signs that said “Got ethics? Make animal torture a felony.” And you’d better believe Mercy for Animals is going to keep flogging the video: if you’re a glutton for punishment, you can still view it at MercyForAnimals.org/OhDairy. — Anastasia Pantsios
