You didn’t think the race in the 9th congressional district between incumbents Marcy Kaptur and Dennis! Kucinich, and newcomer Graham Veysey was going to stay peaceful, did you? Nope. As of this week, Kaptur’s running misleading ads about Kucinich’s voting record, Kucinich is writing indignant letters to the Plain Dealer, and Veysey is sending out emails claiming his opponents are old fogeys and he’s kicking their asses.

Apparently, Kaptur is running one of those ads where you claim an opponent voted against something because they once voted against a bill that combined that good thing with a bunch of really bad things — a trick often used by one party to force politicians from another party to vote against something they like so it can be used in an attack ad.

Kucinich’s response was to write a letter to the Plain Dealer publisher Terrance Egger complaining about their endorsement of Kaptur on February 4.

He accused,

The Plain Dealer is being used as an unwitting accomplice to the ugly, seamy, and dishonest side of politics in a 30-second television ad that began airing last night on local stations. In the ad, U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur is making claims regarding U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich's voting record that grossly misrepresent and distort the truth.

Those misrepresentations and distortions, which are reaching millions of viewers in Northern Ohio, are a desperate attempt to influence the outcome of a Congressional election. From the perspective of your newspaper, they are also an outrageous attempt to use the name and the reputation of The Plain Dealer to validate and legitimize ethically indefensible representations of contrived "facts."

After citing the offending charges, he concludes,

By using the words "No wonder The Plain Dealer endorses Marcy Kaptur," she is blatantly attempting to convince viewers and voters in the 9th District that Congressman Kucinich's votes on the previously cited measures were influential, and, possibly determinative in The Plain Dealer's decision to endorse her.

More likely the “determinative” factor was that the PD just doesn’t like Dennis! and never has.

Meanwhile, 29-year-old Graham Veysey’s campaign gloats in an email titled “Veysey Scores Another Debate Victory at City Club of Cleveland,”

In a debate held at the storied City Club of Cleveland for the new 9th congressional district, Graham Veysey — the fresh alternative candidate in the March 6th Democratic primary — set the tone of the debate by labeling his competitors Congressman Status and Congresswoman Quo. Throughout the week on the campaign trail, Graham Veysey heard repeatedly from voters that he was the best performer in the first televised debate. He brought the palpable momentum into the City Club of Cleveland debate.

One thing that’s not status quo is Kucinich’s long-time campaign website. The tired-looking site has gotten a dramatic facelift.
