Teen Arrested for Stealing RTA Bus

This would have been the biggest RTA news this morning except for that whole thing about an RTA driver uppercutting an unruly female passenger into oblivion and viral fame.

Let it be noted that RTA is not having its best week ever. And let it be noted that the RTA slugfest is overshadowing the fact that a teen broke into the RTA maintenance facility over on Woodhill the other night and stole a bus, taking it for a joyride all the way to E. 12th and Superior befor banging up the bus and getting caught by RTA security.

Take it away, PD blockquote machine:

"Nobody has ever heard of anything like this happening here before," said RTA spokeswoman Mary Shaffer. "We're looking at this incident in hopes of preventing anything like this in the future."

The teen got into the Woodhill facility early Thursday morning. RTA security cameras caught part of the incident, Shaffer said.

He boarded a bus that was in for maintenance and started it — not an easy task.

"There's no keys," Shaffer said. "It's an intricate series of buttons."

An RTA supervisor spotted the damaged bus at 5:43 a.m. It was parked near East 12th Street and Superior Avenue, with the teen at the wheel, Shaffer said.

Wait, it's an "intricate series of buttons" that a teen who's never driven an RTA bus figured out in a matter of minutes? Probably not so intricate, no?

Anyway, RTA commented on this story but has its yap shut about the whole slugfest incident. Maybe they're just busy shining that award for best public transportation from years ago?
