A recent study performed by the bug company Terminix revealed that reported cases of bed bugs are up 36 percent in Cleveland from this time last year.

If the results are accurate, Cleveland would rank eighth in the nation for bed bug reports.

Karen Butler, The Director of the Department of Public Health in Cleveland, told 19 Action News that she doesn't believe the results to be correct, however.

"That reflects the experience of one company," Butler said. "Here in the city of Cleveland our numbers don't reflect that type of significant increase." City numbers show that bed bug reports are down about 20 percent.

That's quite a discrepancy.

The bottom line, however, is that bed bugs are prevalent in Cleveland, particularly during summer vacation months when people are hosting guests, staying in hotels, and moving from place to place.

"Start looking, start looking everywhere and just be a very vigilant," Butler warned.

Before climbing into bed, Butler recommends to peel back the sheets, and to look in the cracks and crevices for both the bugs themselves and for the brown spotted trails they leave behind.

Ew.

The upshot of Cleveland's bed bug conundrum? At least we're not as bad as Columbus, OH, which ranked fourth in Terminix's study.
