Celluloid Hero

Check out the original flick about the Man of Steel as Superman turns 70.

by

The original 1948 version of Superman flashes on the screen tonight to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Clark Kent's creation by native Clevelanders Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The 15-part black-and-white serial will be played in all its 244-minute glory, unlike its initial screenings, when it was played in spurts before feature flicks. The 35-millimeter print from the Library of Congress stars Kirk Alyn as the title character. Only you wouldn't know his name; the opening credits simply bill him as Superman. The curtain parts at 6:30 tonight at the Cleveland Cinematheque, 11141 East Boulevard. Admission is $7 to $10. Call 216-421-7450 or visit www.cia.edu/cinematheque.
