Singer-bassist Sarah Benn and her husband, guitarist Jayson, met some six years ago at the now defunct Lime Spider, an Akron bar that played host to the Black Keys and numerous other indie and underground acts. They then started up Shivering Timbers, an avant-folk act that has provides the perfect vehicle for Sarah’s moody, Neko Case-like vocals. Their latest album, last year’s Sing Sing, begins with the title track, a twangy number that shows off Sarah's powerful voice. But it's the album's second song, a cover of Neil Diamond's "Holly Holy" that comes as a real surprise. The band adds some much-needed grit to the Diamond classic. This show serves as a homecoming of sorts as the band has just returned from an extensive tour. The group plays tonight at 8 at the Akron Civic Theatre. Boy=Girl opens. Tickets are $12 ADV, $15 DOS.
