At their most melodic, the members of Dolly Varden sound like the prickly ’70s power-poppers of Big Star. When they turn down the volume and get twangy, they’re kinda like fellow Chicagoans Wilco. The rootsy quintet is led by Steve Dawson and Diane Christiansen, who are married. Appropriately, their fifth album, The Panic Bell, is filled with bittersweet love songs made by adults who’ve been through a lot together. The chorus of “Everything” sums up the record’s theme: “Everything is better when you are around.”
