PHOTOS: A History of 15 Cleveland Breweries (That Are No More)

When Sunrise Brewing fazed out in 1939, Tip Top Brewing briefly took its place before being bought out by Carling Brewing Company. The above photo features Tip Top's new aluminum tear-off cap.

Schmidt & Sons Brewing Company first started in Pennsylvania, but later relocated to Cleveland and took over the Carling Brewing Company in 1971.

Carling Brewing Company, or the Brewing Corp. as it was also known, was located at 9400 Quincy Ave. Its most famous labels were Red Cap Ale and Black Label Beer. The advertisement above shows off Carling's new two-way twist cap.

The Pilsner Brewing Company was located at 6605 Clark Avenue in Cleveland. During its 70-year career, Pilsner Brewing Co. changed owners once, in 1933.

Standard Brewing Company was located at 5801 Train Avenue on Cleveland's west side. Its most famous labels include Old Bohemian Beer and Erin Brew.

The Cleveland Sandusky Brewing Company was originally formed through a merger of 11 Ohio breweries. The brewery gained a national following when it began toasting its malt, and also for introducing throw-away bottles.

The Leisy Brewing Co., located at 3400 Vega Avenue on Cleveland's west side, was once the city's largest independent brewery. The Black Dallas malt liquor and Leisy Light, Dortmunder, and Mello-Gold beer Isaac Leisy's best selling beers.

The Cleveland Home Brewing Company was located at 2515 East 61st Street. Famous labels include Black Forest and Sonny's.

Forest City Brewing Company was located at 8600 Union Avenue and was known for producing a whole slew of pre and post prohibition brews including Select Pilsner Beer, Waldorf, and Samson Ale. The brewery is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
