Sonata Arctica/Arsis/Kobra and the Lotus

When: Thu., Dec. 13, 7 p.m. 2012

Bands such as like Rhapsody of Fire, Dragonforce, and Kamelot have been unofficially labeled “’Dungeons & Dragons Rock” because the subject matter tends to be fantasy-driven. Sonata Arctica fits the bill; it’s a power- metal band obsessed with role-playing video games. But don’t hold that against them. Having released 7 albums and performed all over the world, from North America to Japan, Sonata Arctica is one of Finland’s finest acts. Their most recent album, Stones Grow Her Name, debuted at #9 on the U.S. Billboard Heatseekers chart, and lest you think it’s the faithful who are buying the disc, a number of songs on the album don’t even pertain to stuff out of a Lord of the Rings book. Songs like “Shitload of Money,” “I Have a Right” and “The Day” are about socially charged issues. But whether dealing with hot topics in the news or things you’d find in a Dungeonmaster’s Guide, Sonata Arctica delivers a sound that’ll satisfy power-metal enthusiasts. (Sam Mendez)
