You Gonna Eat That?

Cleveland art
You may not want to make dinner plans after watching Our Daily Bread, a wordless documentary about where breakfast, lunch, and supper come from. But this is no Fast Food Nation-style indictment. Rather, it’s a matter-of-fact look at industrial food production. Austrian director Nikolaus Geyrhalter sets his camera in vegetable fields, breeding facilities, and slaughterhouses and lets the action play out without narrative. It’s an occasionally unflinching look at mundane processes: Animals are killed and gutted on assembly lines, lettuce is gathered and bagged one head at a time, and bull semen is gathered by lab-coated technicians. Best is the trip to a salt mine located miles underground. The hazy, hollowed-out area looks like something from a trippy sci-fi flick and is even more disturbing than all the pig carcasses.
