Concert Review: Jessica Lea Mayfield at Musica, 5/29

On her latest album, With Blasphemy So Heartfelt, 19-year-old Kent singer-songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield’s haunting vocals and lyrics give a glimpse into the world of a young artist who's wise beyond her years.

At Friday night's show at Musica in Akron, Mayfield — along with her brother David Mayfield (of Cadillac Sky) on bass, Anne Lillith (As If…) on drums and Matt Haas (Six Parts Seven) on guitar — Mayfield stormed through a sizable chunk of her catalog for the packed audience.

She played faves like “Bible Days, Kiss Me Again,” “We’ve Never Lied,” “Fade Away” and “White Lies” (the latter two from the White Lies EP). She also played a cover of Buddy Holly's “Words of Love,” which is featured on a Starbucks compilation.

But the biggest thrill of the night was when Dan Auerbach — the Black Keys guitarist and singer who produced With Blasphemy — showed up at the end of the set and lent his voice and distinctive guitar to “I Can’t Lie to You.” —Jeremy Hills
