10 Things Going on in Cleveland this Weekend (March 7 – 9)

Several significant flamenco artists are participating in the Cleveland Museum of Art's Flamenco Festival. As a companion piece to the live performances, CMA screens director Carlos Saura's 2010 film Flamenco, Flamenco. The follow-up to a 1995 flamenco film he directed, the movie features stylized performances by the likes of Estrella Morente, Tomatito and Eva Yerbabuena. The film shows at 7 tonight and at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Tickets are $9. (Niesel)

Dance the night away at the Happy Dog tonight. DJs Lawrence Daniel Caswell (with his trademark “soul music and other music for the soul”), Darrick Grant of WCSB’s Eclectic Soul and Charles McGaw of WRUW’s On the One will spin tunes There will be funk, disco and R&B, with emphasis on the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s to transport you back in time and help chase away the winter blues once and for all. If “You’re tearing me apart, Lisa!” hasn’t become a staple in your stable of relevant cultural quotes, then you aren’t a relevant member of the culture. Take that. You should see The Room at least once, just so you can say you’ve personally experienced the absolute silt of art’s age-old duck pond. The cult classic has been dubbed by many the worst film in the history of cinema. It not only reorients but transcends the so-bad-it’s-good paradigm. The Room is, at root, a San Francisco love story. Johnny, played by the iconically awful Tommy Wiseau (who also wrote, directed and produced the film, bless him) is deeply in love with Lisa, who’s cheating on Johnny with his best friend Mark. God, this piece of shit is utterly, utterly senseless. Just please make sure you have a designated driver when you go to see it at the Cedar Lee tonight at midnight. Tickets are $5. (Allard)

Time is running out for the wildly unpredictable Cavaliers, who, with the newly acquired Spencer Hawes have managed to win enough games in February to make the playoff conversation a little less theoretical. Tonight, with Waiters and Varejao back in the line-up (we hope), the Cavs must squash the destitute Knicks, whose abysmal season reached new lows when embattled fat point guard Raymond Felton was arrested on gun charges a couple weeks ago. Carmelo and his supporting cast of NBA question marks will do their best to stop the momentum of Kyrie, eyeing his first-ever NBA playoffs in his All-Star-MVP season. Tipoff is at 7:30 at the Q. The local burlesque scene has been thriving for a decade now and to celebrate the Beachland is hosting A Decade of Burlesque in Cleveland. Lounge Kitty and her jazz band open the show, and the event will also feature burlesque, vaudeville, drag, variety and acrobatics. Featured performers include Fantasie D'Light, who's known for her ability to remove her stockings while standing on her head, and Bella Sin, the ample-bosomed founder of the long-running troupe Le Femme Mystique. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. VIP tickets that include reserve seating and a meet and greet will set you back $20. The show starts at 9 p.m. at the Beachland Ballroom. (Niesel)

Treasures on Paper opens today at the Cleveland Museum of Art opens today and is a gathering of more than 70 of the finest prints and drawings in the museum’s collection. Fifty of these pieces belong to a series of 15th-century engravings that are hand-colored in gold. One of Michelangelo’s red chalk studies for the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling will be on display. Also included is a very rare piece etched by Peter Bruegel the Elder of The Rabbit Hunt as well as other prints and drawings by artists like Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Edgar Degas,and Winslow Homer, with dates ranging from the 15th through the 19th centuries. This exhibit runs through June 8. Admission is free. (Trenholme)

Get away from all the snow and ice and smell the flowers. The last day for Orchid Mania at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens is today. Featuring some of the most exotic orchids in the world (like a chocolate orchid that actually smells like chocolate), an interior design showcase featuring room designs based on orchid palettes, advice from the Orchid Doctor on caring for your own at home, as well as activities for the whole family. If you’re a photographer, there will be a special off-hours session where you can get up close and personal with these beautiful flowers. Admission is $11, $3 for kids ages 3 to 12.
