10 Things Going on in Cleveland this Weekend

This meetup fundraiser for TAPS is hosted at Two Bucks in North Olmsted and starts at 5PM. Fundraising tickets are $20 and will include food, pop and domestic beer. TAPS provides immediate and long-term emotional help, hope, and healing to all who are grieving the death of a loved one in military service to America. TAPS meets it mission by providing peer based emotional support, grief and trauma resources, casework assistance and connections to community-based care.

The self-proclaimed "king of comedy," D.L Hughley is one of the most recognized comics on TV and film. He doesn't hold back when delivering his routine and will express his feelings about just about anything, including politics and racism. And don’t expect him to apologize for anything he says because he won’t. He performs tonight at 7:30 and 10:15 p.m. at the Improv and has shows booked through Sunday at the venue. Tickets are $30. The Playhouse Square District Block Party and Tour is tonight at 5. This end-of-summer event costs $25 person and includes a walking tour of the neighborhood, signature foods from the district's restaurants, live entertainment and the Playhouse Square corn hole championship game. Additionally, a cash bar will be offered as well. This outdoor event will be held in Star Plaza, which is located in the epicenter of the Theater District. (Jason Beudert)

Despite the insipid title, the new album, When Dinosaurs Get Drunk, shows some maturity. Even sneering raucous opening tune, "Hahaha," is a catchy song with pretty pop melodies that belie the song's revenge fantasy. "I think we started off as a pop-punk band, but we tried to mature our sound," says guitarist Jesea Lee. "We consider ourselves a good rock band. We got ballads and punky pop songs and other stuff." The 5th Annual Cleveland Garlic Festival will be held today at Shaker Square from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. and tomorrow from noon to 6 p.m. The North Union Farmers Market hosts the event, and proceeds will benefit the organization. Festival attendees will enjoy live music, a celebrity chef competition with free samplings, the Miss Garlic competition, a dedicated area for kids and multiple parades. Sofia Coppola’s film The Bling Ring, based on a Vanity Fair article about Hollywood teenagers who burglarize A-listers’ mansions, has all sorts of extended fetishy sequences throughout. It is the montage to which fashionistas blithely masturbate. The high-cal entree of the 87-minute visual feast is something like a fashion-show, during which the cherubic thieves (Emma Watson, et al.) track down celebrity addresses, easily outwit security cameras, enter through unlocked doors, and then try on the shoes and clothes and brandish the luggage of Lindsay Lohan, Rachel Bilson, Audrina Patridge, Orlando Bloom and Paris Hilton whilst exclaiming “Oh my God!” on repeat. They steal $3 million worth of goods, all told, get caught and then feel really sorry for themselves, in the way of shallow, excessively privileged high-schoolers. Visually arresting fare, but not quite enough narrative meat on the bone. It plays tonight at 9:20 and tomorrow at 8:40 at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. Tickets for non-members are $9. Presented by the Cleveland International Piano Competition and Case Western Reserve University, “Play me, I’m Yours" will feature 25 creatively-decorated pianos throughout UPTOWN in University Circle and downtown Cleveland. The pianos are to be played by people of all ages and skill levels. Today is the last day that this colorful piano exhibition will be on display- so get out there and play!

The Cleveland Museum of Art recently started working with the Transformer Station, a new west side gallery located in Ohio City. CMA’s debut exhibition, The Unicorn, opens today with a reception. Five contemporary artists contributed to the show about the “construction and reconstruction of the past.” The exhibit includes films and photographs. Performance art and the reading of a play are on tap for today’s opening, which takes place from noon until 5 p.m. (Jeff Niesel)

It’s here at last! Weeden. Richardson. Gordon. Cameron. The whole gang is back for what looks like the most promising season in several years. After an encouraging preseason, the Browns are poised to start out on the right foot against a brightly colored but weak Miami Dolphins’ squad. The home opener took just 28 minutes to sell out, so it’s not like you’ll be able to find tickets if you don’t have them already, but coordinate with your friend with the biggest TV to go watch at his/her place, you know? Buy some wings. Heck, you could even saunter on down to the muni lot and gallivant with the tailgaters. It’s an important day in Cleveland, so celebrate.
