10 Things to Do This Weekend (Jan. 2 - 5)

Sat., Jan. 3: Thanks to Medical Mutual, admission to MOCA Cleveland is free on the first Saturday of each month. Stop by today from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. to check out Ferran Adrià: Notes on Creativity and Kirk Mangus: Things Love. The day includes a guided highlights tours from noon to 2 p.m., and One Hour, One Work at 1 p.m. One Hour, One Work is an hour-long session of focused looking, consideration, conversation, interpretation and understanding. Each session focuses one work from MOCA Cleveland’s current exhibitions, selected by one of the museum educators.

Fri., Jan. 2: William Busta Gallery’s first exhibition of 2015 features Jeffry Chiplis’ altered neon light sculptures and Darius Steward’s fascinating, new paintings. The opening reception is free and open to the public today from 6 to 9 p.m. Chiplis was recently honored at SPACES’ annual benefit for his help during their early days at their current home on the Superior Viaduct. Steward collaborated with his friends in the arts group Acerbic (Donald Black, Jr., Gabriel Gonzalez, Shawn Jimenez, Ali McClain and Steward) and others for Ektopos: Out of Place, an abandoned house transformed into an art installation as part of Rooms to Let in Slavic Village last year.

Fri., Jan. 2: Comedian Rodney Perry likes to joke that his favorite Jackson is Joe Jackson because he drove his kids to success. “Those kids wouldn’t have been shit without an ass whopping,” he jokes in one popular skit. “He’s still whopping people to this day.” He also likes to joke about relationships and advises women to do what their men tell them to because “it’s hard being a black man.” Consistently irreverent, Perry currently serves as co-host on BET's The Mo'Nique Show and he also played Harold in the hit Tyler Perry movie Madea's Big Happy Family. He performs tonight at 7:30 and 10:15 at the Improv and has shows scheduled through Sunday. Tickets start at $20, Improv Comedy Club & Restaurant.

Sat Jan. 3: It's the Grog Shop's free weekend and the show starts at 8 p.m. Signals Midwest/Light Years/So Long Albatross/Worship This!/Runaway Brother

Sat., Jan. 3: Christmas is the time of year when we stuff our faces with candy and chocolate and all sorts of food that isn't good for us. Instead of letting it all go straight to your gut, why not work off some of it at Yoga & Music, taking place at 5:30 p.m. at Music Box Supper Club. Incredibly fit instructor Megan Tettau will get you through the workout, and guitarist Thom Pope will provide a soundtrack of roots, blues, jazz, bluegrass and folk. Tickets are $15. Afterward, reward yourself at Loop de Loop Wine Tasting, an event that features four different biodynamic wine samples from the eco-conscious Shenandoah Vineyards and Sobon Estate. The wines will be paired with appetizers. Tickets to the wine tasting are $20 but anyone who goes to yoga gets $5 off the wine tasting after.

Sat., Jan. 3: The Melt Bar & Grill Late Shift at Cleveland Cinemas regularly offers late night screenings of cult classics. Tonight, the Cedar Lee hosts two separate events, both of which have plenty of appeal. At 9:30 and midnight, the theater will screen Good Fellas, Martin Scorsese’s gangster flick that stars Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorrain Bracco and Paul Sorvino. And because it’s the first Saturday of the month, the theater will also host a midnight screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the 1975 film that still draws an exuberant, costumed crowd that likes to throw rice and dry toast and sing the words to the songs in the movie. Tickets to Good Fellas cost $5 and tickets to the Rocky Horror Picture Show are $9, $6 if you don a costume.

Sun., Jan. 4: Cleveland native Alix Kates Shulman (Memoirs of an Ex–Prom Queen) will answer questions today after a screening of She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry, a new documentary that traces the early history of the modern women’s movement (1966–71). The film starts with the founding of the National Organization of Women by "ladies in hats and gloves" and concludes with the emergence of radical feminism. The film includes footage of marches and speeches and includes interviews with a variety of prominent feminists. The screening takes place at 1:30 p.m. at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Sun., Jan. 4: In his routine called the "Butt Screamer," comedian Shane Mauss jokes about how he likes to stick his head into his girlfriend's butt when she's bent over and then begin to have a conversation. "Once in a while, I scream into her butthole," he says very matter-of-factly. He admits that it's a "peculiar" thing to do but it leads him to a conversation about nature versus nurture. Mauss never gets too worked up when he's cracking jokes and his low-key style comes off as rather endearing. He performs tonight at 7 at Hilarities. Tickets are $13 to $18.

Sun., Jan. 4: The first home game of the new year pits LeBron and the Cavaliers against the Mavericks of Dallas, a team whose roster lately improved by the addition of former Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo. The Western Conference is anybody’s conference now, with 6 or 7 teams validly vying for supremacy. The Cavs’ performance against Western Conference teams has been middling at best, but a win against the (admittedly depleted) Grizzlies two weeks ago was an encouraging sign. Today’s game is an afternoon special: tipoff’s at 1 p.m. at Quicken Loans Arena. Tickets start at $25.
