2 Chainz

When: Wed., Dec. 12, 7:30 p.m. 2012

Though 2 Chainz is now one of rap’s biggest stars, it took him a while to get to where he is today. Perhaps that’s because for the majority of his career, he went by the stage name Tity Boy, something that makes 2 Chainz seem like a much better a name. In his early career, he was half of Playaz Circle, along with his friend Earl Conyers, aka Dolla Boy, and they were signed to Ludacris’ Disturbing the Peace label after Ludacris took notice of them after their 2002 release United We Stand, United We Fall. When he left the label to pursue a solo career, he rebranded himself as 2 Chainz. Earlier this year, he finally released his debut album Based on a T.R.U. Story, which features guests Kanye West, Drake, Lil’ Wayne, Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj. Lyrically, the album is lacking, as the majority of songs feature lines about sex or “pussy,” as he puts it. In songs such as in “In Town” and “Extremely Blessed,” he tries to be more romantic, but it just doesn’t seem to work. “Extremely Blessed,” a song about complimenting a certain woman, is followed up with “I Love Dem Strippers,” so any attempt at sounding like Casanova is shot. Another genuinely entertaining moment comes at the end of “In Town,” where Mike Posner, the singer of the chorus, boasts, “no Auto-Tune was used in the making of this recording, thank you for listening.” Hey, credit goes where credit is due, right?
