A Banned Man

When: Thu., Sept. 4 2014

Even though he’s been banned from making films, Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof still somehow found a way to shoot Manuscripts Don’t Burn, a thriller based on real events. The movie recounts the various ways in which an Islamic state will silence its dissidents (in this case, the film focuses on two particularly brutal operatives). Loosely based on the “Chain Murders,” in which roughly 80 Iranian intellectuals were murdered between the late ’80s and 1998, the film has received rave reviews ever since its release last year. It makes its Cleveland premiere tonight at 6:45 at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque and shows again at 8:45 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $9. (Niesel)
