A Complex Composition

When: Thu., April 10 2014

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 is one of the most difficult pieces of music ever composed. Remember the music in the movie Shine? The film was about how David Helfgott struggled to play the piece. Tonight Yuja Wang joins the Cleveland Orchestra to perform the work that strikes fear in the hearts of pianists everywhere. Don’t expect any injuries tonight; the 27-year-old soloist is renowned for her mastery of technical demands at the keyboard, as well as her charismatically insightful stage presence. Giancarlo Guerrero, Nashville Symphony music director and principle guest conductor of Cleveland Orchestra Miami (the Orchestra’s annual residency in Miami), conducts tonight’s all-Russian program including Sergei Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. Tonight’s concert at Severance Hall starts at 7:30. There are two performances tomorrow, at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. (both minus Scheherazade), and one at 8 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets start at $29.
