A Gene Thing

When: Thu., April 24 2014

In 1990, the Havasupai Tribe that lives in a remote part of the Grand Canyon gave blood samples to researchers who wanted to study their DNA to find out why there were so many cases of diabetes in the tribe. But that wasn't the only reason why the researchers were studying the DNA. They also wanted to do genetic research about the tribe's history. Once the Havasupai got wind of that, they successfully sued the university. That court case is the basis of Informed Consent, a play that's part of Cleveland Playhouse's New Ground Theatre Festival. The play opens tonight at 7:30 at the Second Stage and it runs through May 18. Tickets are $45 to $72. (Jeff Niesel)
