Rock & Pop

When: Tue., Aug. 1, 8 p.m. 2017

The Leeds, UK-based indie/art pop trio, Alt-J has accomplished plenty in just a handful of years. The band won the British Mercury Prize in 2012 for its debut album, An Awesome Wave, and also picked up a Grammy nomination for its second album, This Is All Yours. Like the band’s previous two albums, the new album, Relaxer, displays a band that isn’t afraid to reap the benefits of advanced, modern music technology with larger-than-life soundscapes. In fact, many critics have christened them the kings of internet era pop. For this new album, the band brought in a few special guest singers, including Wolf Alice frontwoman, Ellie Rowsell, on tracks “3WW” and “Deadcrush” and English singer-songwriter, Marika Hackman on the song “Last Year.” Plus, the music video for their new track “In Cold Blood” even features narration from none other than Iggy Pop. Though the album is only eight tracks long, frontman Joe Newman remains an incredibly distinctive singer with an especially chilling performance on their minimalistic track, “Adeline.” The band’s meticulous programming, idiosyncratic keyboards, and ventures into other genres like art pop, hip-hop and electronic music, make it far more adventurous than its indie rock peers.
