Animal Collective

Hollinndagain (Paw Tracks)

by

Some so-called treasures are better left buried. First released as a limited-edition LP back in 2002, the recently reissued Hollinndagain is a scrapbook of several live performances by an Animal Collective that was still grasping for its sound. These seven songs have a rudimentary, open-ended feel that falls short of the psychedelic majesty of other albums, most notably Danse Manatee and Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished. The boys whoop, holler, and excitedly beat their chests, while sparse, teeter-tottering keyboard melodies try to claw their way free from the tarpit of background noise. This disc is for completists only and even then, maybe not.
