As Nasty as She Wants to Be

When: Fri., Oct. 25 2013

Released three years ago, Joan Rivers — A Piece of Work, Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg's warts-and-all documentary about the foul-mouthed 77-year-old standup comic, opens with a montage of clips from yesteryear. Johnny Carson tells her that one day she'll be a "big star," and headlines proclaim she has paved the way for female comedians everywhere. While the filmmakers suggest that things aren't as glamorous as you'd think, Rivers is a real survivor. She's somehow managed to eke out a living and continually reinvent herself as talk show host, reality TV star, author, jewelry designer and fashion consultant. You name it, she's done it. Tonight, she'll return to what she does best: provide some good old-fashioned standup comedy. Don't expect anything tame either. She's only gotten nastier with old age. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Palace Theatre and tickets range from $10 to $55. (Niesel)
