Bad Veins/Public/Tracy Morgan Freeman/Husbands & Wives

When: Sun., July 28, 8 p.m. 2013

Listening to The Mess We’ve Made, the second full-length album from Cincinnati-based band the Bad Veins, it’s hard to believe that these guys are still just a local act trying to make it big. The album has all the production value, variety, talent and originality to be a national success. Benjamin Davis is the lead creative mind behind the band, and he writes songs like Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, only Davis’ songs are slightly less depressing and more uplifting. All his tunes are masterfully produced as a symphony of sound envelops their high-energy choruses. In fact, the instrumentals could be mistaken for an Imagine Dragons song (sorry if that detracts from the band’s indie cred). “Don’t Run” features distorted bass and an infectious string line and melodic vocal part. And the music video for “Dancing On TV” is impossible not to love; in it, a young woman dances along to the song on a lonely night in high socks, athletic shorts and an open flannel shirt exposing her bra.
