MEET THE BAND: Chrissy Costanza (lead vocals), Dan Gow (guitars), Will Ferri (drums)
BREAK OUT YEAR: This was a pivotal year for the Poughkeepsie-based band. It started with the release of the EP Infinity. That led to their first headlining tour — the Sink or Swim Tour, which came to Cleveland this summer. They jumped to the big time with a tour through Southeast Asia, where the band is hugely popular, and Australia at the end of the summer with their friend, singer-songwriter Alex Goot. "It's crazy," says Gow. "The band is bigger overseas than in the States."
A YOUTUBE SENSATION: Against the Current (ATC) started out as a cover band, producing covers of contemporary pop songs from artists such as Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson. "We started off three years ago as your local garage band," Costanza says. "We did a cover with Alex Goot and released that on the same day as our album came out. Although people found out about us through our covers, we started writing original music first." The first concept video was for the original "Closer, Faster." September saw the release of the second original video for "Another You, (Another Way)." The storyline has Costanza falling for a bad boy. Costanza keeps in close contact with her fans through vlogs and a lively presence on Twitter, Facebook and other social media outlets. The "Ask Chrissy" vlog can lean toward the bizarre (she reveals her aversion to mustard).
WHY YOU SHOULD HEAR THEM: The title track from the band's latest EP, "Infinity" is a tasty slice of pop/rock with just a dash of alt. Costanza weaves her way through some varied vocal gymnastics on it as well as on "Another You (Another Way)." She coaxes the listener to "pull me closer, kiss me faster" on "Closer, Faster." A big guitar riff opens "Something New," before Costanza jumps into the mix and drives the song forward. "Comeback Kid" rounds out the EP. The music is sometimes compared to Avril Lavigne or Paramore but more accessible. The band has finished its new EP Gravity, which will be out right before Christmas, but anyone who buys a deluxe VIP ticket to a show can come on the band's bus to hear the EP.
