Beachwood Goes Mad

An entrepreneur makes plans for the former Napa Valley Grille.

Dashboard Confessional, with Weezer, the Strokes, and Sparta Blossom Music Center, 1145 West Steels Corners Road, Cuyahoga Falls 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 15. $22.50/$27.50. 216-241-5555
It's been nearly a year since Napa Valley Grille sounded the retreat at Beachwood Place. And it's been about four months since Solon's Sapphire Grille crashed and burned. But entrepreneur Mary Ann Davis, Sapphire Grille's former financial backer, has salvaged the best of both businesses for her newest venture, Mad 4 You. The Mediterranean-style bistro and market employs key staffers from the Solon spot in the handsome, high-visibility space that used to house the Napa Valley Grille. Mad 4 You opened for lunch last week; dinner service is scheduled to begin this week, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to call first to confirm.

Davis, who operates career colleges in Ohio and Mississippi, says she has traveled extensively, dined exclusively, and has always wanted to try her hand at running her own restaurant. After her split with the Sapphire Grille owners last winter, she kept select staff members on her payroll, including General Manager Anthony Cipullo and Executive Chef Chris Feuerborn; now, both men are reprising their roles at the new restaurant. Feuerborn's lunch and dinner menus are eclectic, with dishes ranging from four-cheese pizza ($11) to teriyaki-glazed chicken with snow peas ($18). At lunch, the focus is on sandwiches, salads, and pastas, mostly in the $6 to $10 range; an à la carte Sunday brunch menu ($7 to $12) offers omelets, quiche, crêpes, Belgian waffles, and French toast.

The market stocks a variety of prepared foods, as well as gourmet mustards, tapenades, and flavored dipping oils; early-morning visitors also will find pastries and French-press coffee. Market hours are 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The bistro opens at 11 a.m. daily and, once dinner service begins, will close weekdays at 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday at 11:30 p.m., and Sunday at 9 p.m. Mad 4 You is on the second floor of Beachwood Place, 26300 Cedar Road in Beachwood; call 216-378-0344.

Canned Tomato . . . Hudson's popular Italian restaurant the Red Tomato (116 West Streetsboro Road, in the Acme Plaza; 330-650-5050) is closing on August 31; owners Ricardo Sandoval and Franco Boffice (who are also partners in Tremont's Fat Cats) hope to reopen in a new, nearby location around the end of the year. Sandoval says the move was prompted by the ongoing reconstruction of the Acme Plaza, which is expected to eat up some of the Tomato's current space.
