Best Bookstore for Hippies

Bookstore on West Twenty-Fifth

While not creatively named, Bookstore on West Twenty-Fifth has everything hippies want in a used bookstore: an owner sporting a puffy white beard, funky hours of operation, folkies strumming guitars, vintage reading chairs, and an infinite number of weird-ass books. The psychology section, for example, often contains out-of-print tomes by Wilhelm Reich, a brilliant but controversial psychiatrist who conducted experiments with orgone, the universe's "primordial cosmic energy." Such oddball selections are best served in small doses, so take frequent breaks to pet Luna, the store's Maine Coon, one of the world's largest breeds of domestic cat. Luna is a giant brown tabby resembling a raccoon's long-lost cousin, and she's always up for some serious cuddle time, should Dr. Reich psych you out.
