Best Coach

Paul Silas

Back when Paul Silas wore the short-shorts himself, players celebrated a basket by hustling back down the court to play some defense. Today's hotshots practically need a time-out to complete their celebrations. Not on Silas's watch. He began his first year as the Cavaliers' coach with the youngest team in the NBA, and he nurtured it to the doorstep of the playoffs. All the while, he sharpened LeBron's game and tempered his ego, he made Z a more effective player than he'd been in ages, and he jettisoned every stiff who didn't play team ball. It feels as if it's been a generation since the Cavaliers were any good; the fact that they're coming around with Silas at the helm is surely more than coincidence.
