SynDee Klingenberg and Wendy Thompson didn't invent the cupcake (pretty sure that was Al Gore), but they did launch their Tremont bakeshop A Cookie and A Cupcake in 2008, well ahead of the Great Cupcake Blitz of 2011. Since then, it's pretty much been downhill for the gourmet cupcake craze, what with everybody and their grandmother opening up a garage business. "Whatevs," say Klingenberg and Thompson, who continue to fill box upon box with delicious cupcakes (and cookies and wedding cakes), oblivious to any downturn in the market. Each day the duo offers a dozen different flavors of moist, airy, tooth-shatteringly sweet cup-shaped cakes. Classics like red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, fresh strawberry with custard and vanilla buttercream, German chocolate cake with coconut-pecan goo and brown sugar buttercream, and Grasshopper with mint buttercream act like sirens, luring weak-willed shoppers onto the jagged rocks of so many dessert pastries.
