Best Free Classical Concerts

City Music Cleveland

Classical music has always been seen as an elite taste, in part because the price of most tickets prevents all but the well-heeled to hear it performed regularly. But the six friends who founded City Music Cleveland believed that music should be enjoyed by everyone. The orchestra is now in its seventh season of offering free concerts in neighborhoods all over Northeast Ohio, from Slavic Village to Detroit Shoreway, and from Strongsville to Rocky River. Their repertoire isn't the same old hoary hits either: CityMusic's concerts have featured such adventurous works as Sibelius' Rakastava. There's also an education program in which the orchestra's musicians teach Cleveland schoolchildren how to listen to and read music and play instruments. And yep, these guys are pro all the way: They'll make their debut at New York City's Lincoln Center on November 12.
