Tucked away behind a nondescript storefront, the Hawk has been flaunting its no-frills shot-and-beer reputation in front of neighborhood regulars since the early '70s. Anchored by bartender Chris Baumgartner, the club boasts a healthy happy hour during the week, with its modestly priced pitchers of beer on tap and shots of booze from the well. On the weekends, the place gets so packed that it can take 15 minutes to navigate the 75 feet from the front door to the men's room in the back. But don't expect a pretty-boy college crowd. These guys are garden-variety working class, from construction workers and mechanics to a vice president of National City Bank.
