In a perfect world, all concerts would be free and open to all ages, but until then, there's Square Records. The Highland Square shop offers the region's best lineup of in-stores - free shows held in record stores. Since it opened two years ago, Square has been the stage for more than 20 acts, including such notables as the Evens (the latest project from Fugazi's Ian MacKaye), Chicago's avant-punk Make Believe, and the one-man acoustic band Graves. But local bands are also welcome; Square has hosted the reflective instrumentals of the Six Parts Seven and hardcore groups such as Don Austin. Now the intimate shows are as much a fixture of the store as its tidy selection of hard-to-find records.
