It may be set back a mere dozen feet from the bustle of Detroit Avenue, but the terraced brick patio at Three Birds feels like a romantic secret garden, fringed in ivy and begonias, shaded by mature trees, and enlivened with songs of warblers and finches. Stylish aluminum-mesh chairs and tables topped with black market umbrellas nestle between blooms and blossoms, and as twilight advances, teensy white lights begin to twinkle in the leaves like lightning bugs. Of course, a fab setting is only half the "Best Outdoor Dining" equation: The other half is the food. And here, Three Birds also hits the mark, with a lively menu of modern American cuisine that pays occasional homage to the nouveau-Thai stylings. Settled beneath the trees with a friend or three, a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, and such fine fare, a Greater Clevelander could start believing that this really is "the best location in the nation."
