The Fountain of Eternal Life

Yes, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but we know a giant phallus when we see one. And "The Fountain of Eternal Life," the downtown war memorial, fits the bill indeed. Sculpted by Cleveland Institute of Art grad Marshall M. Fredericks and officially dedicated in 1964, the bronze statue shows a muscular, mint-green man extending from an ornate round base, fountains spraying around his trunk, one arm outstretched to heaven. On a plaque at the fountain, Fredericks tells us that the figure is "man rising from the flames and reaching for eternal peace." Sure. And the Washington Monument is about feminine virtue and a mother's love.
