Music Around Town

Blake Shelton/Easton Corbin/Jana Kramer

When: Thu., Aug. 1, 7 p.m. 2013

One of country’s biggest stars, Black Shelton has proved to be quite the tastemaker. As one of the judges on The Voice, he capably acts the part of vocal and performance coach, passing a decade’s worth of experience to up-and-coming singers. On his latest album, Based on a True Story, he doesn’t deviate too far from the tried-and-true. “Sure Be Cool If You Did” and “Do You Remember” are by-the-numbers ballads. The former is a standard love tune and the latter offers a gentle look back at childhood dreams and aspirations. That stuff always plays well to country crowds who have become accustomed to the way country has gone pop. Anthems such as “Small Town Big Time” and “Boys Round Here” will keep the rowdy fans happy too. (Jeff Niesel)
