Boban and Marko Markovic Orchestra/Harmonia

When: Wed., Sept. 24, 8 p.m. 2014

If you’ve never experienced a night of Boban i Marko Markovic Orkestar before, you’re truly missing out. Hailing from Serbia, the father and son duo takes its trademark Romani and brass band-infused sound and run with it. Their latest, Golden Horns, was released back in 2012, and even though it’s more of a “best of” compilation, it hasn’t lost its relevance. Tracks like “Khelipe E Cheasa” and “Obecanje” feature Boban’s skillful trumpeting, lending a very classic Balkan feel to what also sounds like a pop song that could be playing over any European radio station. “Sljivovica” boasts a catchy beat and English-sung refrain as intoxicating as the liquor itself in a track that sounds very western, while “Ederlezi” and “Hava Naguila” offer takes on iconic old Balkan tunes that even Babas and Dedas would be dancing to. To say to expect a party tonight would be an understatement, so bring your dancing shoes. If you’ve never kolo danced before, just grab the hand of the person next you and follow their lead. Opa!
