Book the Cook

By day, Kelly Wright is plating up southwestern-style fare in her Borderline Café in Lakewood. But this afternoon, she trades a spatula for a microphone to team with keyboardist Chris Hanna as the jazz duo Sugar Coat. Their repertoire is stacked with standards like "Cry Me a River," "Fly Me to the Moon," and "Can't Help Lovin' That Man." But they're just as comfortable jamming on whatever anyone wants to hear. "The way we perform isn't really a show," says Wright, who's also been heard around town as a backup singer for über-rocker Anne E. DeChant. "If people ask if we know a song, we'll rifle through our stuff. If we have it, we'll play it." Sugar Coat goes onstage at 2 p.m. today at Lakewood Public Library, 15425 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood. Admission is free. Call 216-226-8275 or visit www.lkwdpol.org.
