Breaking Laces

Thursday, June 1, at Wilbert's.

Something of an enigma, the fine tunesmiths of this Brooklyn trio are capable of writing catchy songs in a variety of genres, from indie and power pop to folky, confessional rock. That said, their ballads pale in comparison to their skill with a little rhythmic shuffle and subtly plied hook. Their latest, Lemonade, is a more polished effort, as billowing, shimmering psych-pop such as "Shack Up SOS" demonstrates, but their scattershot approach remains distracting and plays against their strengths, exemplified by the Goo Goo Dolls-style jangle-pop of "States Away." Still, the band's talent is evident throughout the album, so it's easy to imagine them putting it all together one day with a chart-topping album.
