Whether it's the band's legendary feud with the Dandy Warhols or wrangling with its own numerous major and minor labels, trouble follows Anton Newcombe and the Brian Jonestown Massacre like hippies follow Phish. Having conceived BJM as the next generation of psychedelic glam popsters with a distinctly '60s tone, Newcombe has also fashioned an atmosphere of turmoil and upheaval to rival anything that a band from that contentious decade experienced at the time. With last year's Zero
(subtitled Songs From the Album Bravery Repetition and Noise
-- a joke, since there was no record by that name), BJM headed in two directions simultaneously. Although the album, a stopgap release on Bomp until its contract with TVT could be resolved, was more orchestrated and arranged than previous efforts, it also had a distinct lo-fi vibe, as though the band had released the working tapes that it intended to use as blueprints for its next album. As BJM emerges from a long (at least for it) hiatus with a series of live shows, the band seems ready to make up for lost time. It's not only on the road, but back in the studio -- in an effort to actually record an album called Bravery Repetition and Noise
, tentatively slated for an October release on Bomp. Newcombe has also announced his intention to tape several of the current shows in anticipation of a live album in the near future and has put out a call for entries from interested bands to participate in a Brian Jonestown Massacre tribute album. Given his almost megalomaniacal control over BJM to this point, it seems only logical that Newcombe himself should oversee the creation of a tribute to himself.
