Buffalo Jazz Octet

When: Wed., Aug. 23, 7 p.m. 2017

Like Cleveland, in some ways, Buffalo has an extraordinary jazz heritage. The titans of American jazz all passed through our Rust Belt cousin, especially in the 1970s. The Colored Musicians Club still stands in downtown Buffalo, where black musicians unionized in the early 20th century to make their own way in the city’s discriminatory music scene. (This happened in many major cities.) Now, the Buffalo Jazz Octet carries a tradition of groundbreaking instrumentation forward. We’ve been keeping an eye on them, and it’s exciting to have them in Cleveland tonight. Not long ago, JazzBuffalo called their show “spellbinding,” and we’re looking forward to that sort of spirit at the Bop Stop. (Eric Sandy)
