Building a Mystery

Theater mogul comes out of artistic hibernation to debut tongue-in-cheek thriller.

Since taking over Cleveland Public Theatre's artistic direction two years ago, Raymond Bobgan hasn't found much time to work on his original material. Until now. During this weekend's workshop productions of Cut to Pieces, Bobgan teams with the theater's education director, Chris Seibert, to stage an Agatha Christie-like mystery that is set in a mansion where family and friends have gathered to hear the reading of a will. And here's a twist: Seibert plays the show solo, with the other characters appearing on a video screen behind her. "The tone is very tongue-in-cheek, despite the grim material," says Bobgan. "It has a funny, quirky appeal to it — there's a game show in the middle — but it's also about the dismembering power of sexual violence and love, and investigating yourself and your own unconscious." Showtime is at 7:30 p.m. today through Monday at Parish Hall, 6145 Detroit Avenue. Tickets are $10. Call 216-631-2727 or visit www.cptonline.org.
