Cabinet/Big Leg Emma

When: Thu., March 20, 8:30 p.m. 2014

Harnessing the jam band powers of the bluegrass scene, Cabinet has attracted a fairly dedicated fanbase across the country. The band distinguishes itself from others in the arena by treating its music not strictly as bluegrass, but as a medley of many musical traditions. Leap, released in 2012, provides a well-rounded overview of the band. Present are the fan-favorite tunes like “Heavy Rain” and “Eleanor” and the more open-ended fields of “Carry Me in a Bucket.” Their studio output, to be sure, speaks for itself. But Cabinet shines on the stage. They’ve got a handful of fine live albums (the This Is Cabinet sets; cue up “Mr. Spaceman” immediately), but there’s no substitute for really seeing them up close and in person. Dispel any preconceptions about ive bluegrass shows; you’ll be dancing your ass off at tonight’s gig. Cabinet keeps things fairly rowdy. (Eric Sandy)
