Seasonal Special Happenings

Cleveland Pops

When: Fri., Feb. 18 2011

If you haven't caught the bug yet, here's another opportunity to expose yourself to tango: Conductor Carl Topilow leads the Cleveland Pops Orchestra in a concert of La Musica de Argentina tonight. Aiding the orchestra in their explorations will be Cleveland's Oblivion Project, formed to explore the sultry, sexy music of legendary Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla. Dancers Rebecca Sweet and Heriberto Perez will expand the theme with some sultry, sexy tangoing to go with. Incidentally, North America's current tango obsession can be traced back to 1983, when the dance show Tango Argentino opened in Paris. It moved to Broadway in 1985; and by 1991, tango festivals were being held from coast to coast. The craze continues tonight at 8 p.m. at Severance Hall. Tickets are $28 to $72. Purchase them by phone at 216-231-1111 or online at — Elaine T. Cicora
