Cocktail Hour Concerts: Alan Brooks

When: Thu., July 11, 7 p.m. 2013

Born in Cleveland, singer-songwriter Alan Brooks started writing songs when he was still in high school and cut his musical teeth on open mic nights hosted by local folkie Charlie Mosbrook. Then, when he was in college in Chicago, he started playing at local coffeehouses and wine bars. Though he’s a straight-up singer-songwriter, Brooks grew up on Motown and the Temptations and cites jazz pianist Thelonius Monk as a huge inspiration. Engineered by Jake Fader (Mifune, Kokolo), his latest album, Alibi, features low-key songs that show off his soulful voice and nimble-fingered guitar work. Songs such as “Silver Lining” and “Taxi Cab” were recorded in one take and have a real immediacy to them as a result. Brooks performs tonight at 7 at the Museum of Contemporary Art. (Jeff Niesel)
