Cold War Kids/Elliot Moss

When: Wed., Jan. 28, 8 p.m. 2015

From 2006’s Robbers & Cowards onward, Cold War Kids have electrified the post-2000 indie rock scene with infectious grooves and evocative lyrics. (Remember the bobbing and weaving of “St. John”? The yearning of “Hospital Beds”? Hold My Home, which the band released in October 2014, continues that tradition and, almost more than anything, sees the band returning to its rock-casual roots. “First,” with its pulsing percussion and dazzling upper-register synth, calls to mind the hopeful and optimistic tones first heard nearly a decade ago from this band. Singer Nathan Willett sounds as dynamic as ever, and the influence of multifaceted drummer Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse, The Shins) is palpable throughout. In fact, bearing down on the latter note, current-era Cold War Kids shares certain strands of DNA with post-2004 Modest Mouse, which you can take however you please. (Sandy)
