Comic Rocky LaPorte at Hilarities

When: Aug. 16-18 2012

It ain’t easy being funny, says comic Rocky LaPorte: “The failure rate is huge. If I write 10 jokes, maybe two will work.” On the other hand, the former Chicago truck driver has plenty of material to work with. “I mainly write jokes about the dumb people I see,” he says. “And there's certainly no shortage of those.” Fresh off a cross-country trip on his Harley, the Hells Angel wannabe rolls into Hilarities tonight at 8. The down-to-earth comic has opened for big-deal colleagues like Drew Carey, Tim Allen, and Louie Anderson, and appeared on the small screen in shows like Cheers and his own half-hour special on Comedy Central. While he says he strives to keep his act relatively clean and mostly accessible, Cleveland audiences can expect to hear a lot about that just-completed road trip, including his advice on how to get rid of truck-stop panhandlers. “Just look at them and say, ‘You think you've got it bad? I just shit my pants.’ Works every time.” LaPorte is at Hilarities for five performances through Saturday. Ticket prices range from $18 to $23 at the box office, by phone, or online.
