Culture Clash

The Maltz Museum celebrates Christmas today with<\!s>.<\!s>.<\!s>. moo goo gai pan and fortune cookies? Today’s Chinese Food and a Movie event stems from the Jewish community’s longstanding tradition of going out for Chinese food on Christmas Day. “Probably because so few restaurants are open,” says Lynda Bender, the museum’s director of education and public programs. “Even Ralphie’s family in A Christmas Story>/i> found themselves eating Chinese food when all else failed.” There’s also hands-on activities and exhibit tours. Plus, short films about Jewish culture unspool throughout the day. “The movie theater is often the only other place open on December 25,” says Bender. “So this is something our families can relate to.”
