Rock & Pop, Seasonal Special Happenings

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr./Chad Valley

When: Thu., Feb. 13, 9 p.m. 2014

Eccentric indie pop artists Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. make strangely likable songs out of chaotic elements. Bouncy synths and vocal lines reminiscent of early ’90s R&B feature hip-hop-styled samples and heavily affected drums. Overall, there's a lot going on. The band recently released a new mixtape, Produce, and it essentially comes off as an indie pop band co-opting hip-hop mixtape culture. With a host of samples and basement-recording wonkiness, Produce is one of their best recording efforts to date. The slightly unpolished edges and eclectic collection of sounds make for an interesting backing to their smooth and melodic singing. Known for lively and energetic live shows, the guys deliver a bit of glitz and glamor to enhance the super-excitable vibes. (Patrick Stoops)
